Joseph W. and Maria C. Shaw Graduate Scholarship in Archaeology
Joe and Maria Shaw inspired generations of students in the Faculty of Arts & Science at the University of Toronto through their deep knowledge of Minoan archaeology and passion for teaching. For their leadership, friendship and research, the Archaeology Centre has established the Joseph W. and Maria C. Shaw Graduate Scholarship in Archaeology with tremendous support from colleagues, friends and alumni.
The Shaws shaped our knowledge of the ancient Minoan civilization of Crete. Their excavation and preservation of Kommos revealed a significant commercial centre, complete with a major harbour, monumental Minoan palatial buildings, massive stone storage complexes, a Minoan town and a Greek sanctuary. Their research set a benchmark for the field and created an invaluable resource for international scholars working in the Aegean Bronze Age.
This scholarship will be a permanent legacy at the University of Toronto in their honour, while also providing exceptional opportunities for future generations of students to pursue their dreams of archaeological field work.
